KWL (Levels 1 and 3)

Add your thoughts using the KWL approach. Thinking about Game Mechanics, Games-Based Learning or gamification.....

K = What do you know? games can be motivational and engaging for students.
W = What do you want to learn? how to create structured game experiences
L = What have you learned? (we'll do this last one later) The structure of games and the criteria to follow for effective games in learning.

Reflection

There are lots of examples around us that illustrate how GBL can be integrated into the classroom to provide a challenging, rewarding and learning experience.

Level 2

Where do I start?

Identify some learning outcomes that you will be visiting with your students in upcoming lessons. Note down here some ways they might benefit from gamification.
Year 10 Evolution topic

Explain how natural selection relates to changes in population of varying organisms.

Outline the roles of genes and environmental factors in the survival of organisms in a population.

These outcomes can be made into a game by using an existing Natural Selection game to see which character survives and relate this to the environment and individual characteristics.

Observe and reflect
After playing a game what are your personal thoughts about the design and elements involved and how any of these could help you in thinking about doing the same in a learning activity?
The games are not complicated but they do need to be structured well. They can take a lesson or a unit of work depending on the focus. Motivational strategies need to be built into the game mechanics and achievable for students.

Level 3

Premiers Reading Challenge Reflection

Write your thoughts here and or print a rubric and circle the appropriate areas you notice as you review the rules of this gamified experience. (feel free to scan or photograph and upload your rubic to this page.)
This is a really powerful and engaging challenge for students. As they continue to participate yearly, they are rewarded. This is very encouraging as reading is a skill students need to keep practicing as they get older.

Zombie Learning Reflection

Write your thoughts here and or print a rubric and circle the appropriate areas you notice as you review the rules of this gamified experience.
(feel free to scan or photograph and upload your rubic to this page.)
OMG this is fantastic!!! Combining the real word with a popular fantasy scenario engages a wider range of students. Having reference to key geographic concepts in a fantasy setting like zombies is amazing!

You Try/ A final reflection

Add your finished plan here as an upload file or as text you have cut and pasted into the wiki. We would love to give you feedback to help you get started. (remember it does not need be perfect, it is a first attempt). Alternatively it can be emailed to us instead.
